First Thursdays Studio meets/crits

As part of the Stocktake process, the studio agreed to re-start a regular meeting session where studio members could book a slot to talk about whatever was occupying their thoughts at the time. This might be work they are making, thoughts or concepts that are driving their work or really anything that they might want to share with the group. This was something that had always been within the core objectives of AirSpace at its inception, but had lapsed slightly, as the gallery and its commitments and objectives took an increasingly central role over the last few years.

It was agreed at the outset, that in order to keep the sessions coherent and to avoid the possibility of the evening becoming consumed in some rambling meanderings of thought, opinion and debate, that each presenter (and there would be 3 at each meet) would have a strict 30 minute time limit within which they could present. At the end of the period, no matter at what stage the presenter had got to with their session, we would stop and move on to the next presenter.

Thursday's first first Thursday saw Kate Lynch, Joyce Iwazsko and Pete Smith take the opportunity of having a communal crit of their current work covering themes of text, design, campaign, decay, histories, the macabre, film, self-place and others. We moved , as a group, from a presentation and talk in our resource room to individual studio spaces, so we not only got a chance to discuss the work, but also to see the spaces in which it was made. A really enjoyable, open and critical evening which was a great start to what should probably always be a feature of a studio group's activities.
